One of the special things that makes Beaufort SC a wonderful place to live are our pristine beaches. Unspoiled by development, Beaufort SC prides itself on being an area with natural sandy shores that make a nice walk on the beach with fresh air and the surf coming in along side of you one of the most common reasons that people relocate to our area in droves. Now, a new study says Beaufort SC area beaches are some of the cleanest in the whole country.
Researchers with the Environment America Research & Policy Center and the Frontier Group have spent a year testing for water pollution at nearly 5,000 spots on beaches all over the country and the findings were really good when it came to local beaches here in Beaufort SC.
While the study found that 60% of the beaches tested had unsafe pollution levels at least once during the testing process in 2018, it also found that 98% of the time the water at Beaufort SC beaches was healthy and clean.
The study revealed that out all of the beaches that were tested in Beaufort SC, there is only potentially unsafe or polluted water just a mere 2% of the time.
The only beaches in South Carolina that fared better than here in Beaufort SC were beaches in both Colleton and Charleston counties.
According to results of the study, 122 spots were sampled in South Carolina and out of those spots 55 of them indicated unsafe levels of contamination at least once. A sampling site in Horry County near Myrtle Beach tested as potentially unsafe for 32 days; which was more days than any other spot in the state, and 46 percent of the days that sampling took place.
More than half of the nearly 5,000 beach sites sampled for bacteria across the country were potentially unsafe for swimming on at least one day during the year long study that was released earlier this summer.
The study also found that contamination from urban runoff, sewage overflows, failing septic tank systems and concentrated livestock manure all contribute to poor and polluted water quality at America’s beaches.
Each year in the U.S., swimmers suffer from an estimated 57 million cases of recreational water-borne illness.
But, not here in Beaufort SC.
